Tottori Sand Dunes and San’in Kaigan Geopark
A major geosite in the geopark, the terrain was formed by many kinds of rock carried by a river that wound through volcanic mountains. Upon this structural base, granite from the Chugoku Mountains eroded by winds became sediment deposits carried by the Sendai River into the Sea of Japan. Sea currents brought the sand up from the seafloor and seasonal winds from the northwest deposited it back onto the shore, forming the famous sand dunes.

These unique houses have a garage-like space at sea level for mooring a boat, and families live on the floor above. Visitors to the area can try fishing or stay in a minshuku inn, go to an onsen, or have local sake made from an ancient variety of red rice brewed by Mukai Shuzo, the closest sake brewery to the ocean in Japan.
